Ulleungdo rewards travelers who leave room for uncertainty. Ferries cross open water, weather can change quickly, and the island’s steep terrain makes a mainland-style checklist impractical. A good trip uses one harbor area as a base, protects the arrival and departure days, and chooses one major outing per day.

Before you book: build a weather buffer
There is no bridge or airport connection for ordinary visitors. Passenger ferries usually depart from ports such as Pohang, Mukho, or Gangneung, but routes and vessels change by season. Buy the ferry first, then reserve island accommodation. Avoid a tight international flight or KTX connection on the same day as your return crossing; a cancellation can move the entire journey by a day or more. Three nights is a sensible minimum for a first visit.

A practical first-time itinerary
- Day 1: arrive, check in around Dodong or Jeodong, and walk only a nearby waterfront section after confirming the last local bus.
- Day 2: choose a clear-weather circuit toward Nari Basin and the northern viewpoints. Treat the mountain interior as the main event rather than adding several distant stops.
- Day 3: explore the harbor communities, a coastal walking section, or an island boat excursion if sea conditions permit. Keep an indoor museum or café alternative.
- Departure day: check the ferry operator’s notice before breakfast and arrive at the terminal earlier than you would for a train.

Getting around the island
Public buses connect the main settlements, but intervals can be long and the road is winding. Save the Korean names of your stop and accommodation, carry a charged phone, and ask the host to confirm the final return bus. Taxis are useful for one-way hikes; agree on the pickup point and approximate fare. Rental vehicles require confident driving on narrow, steep roads. If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare for both the sea crossing and the island bus.

What to pack and what commonly goes wrong
- Pack light rain protection, grippy walking shoes, sun protection, and any essential medicine; island pharmacies may not stock a specific brand.
- Do not enter fenced farmland or photograph residents at close range without permission, especially in small villages.
- Mobile reception is generally useful, but download maps and ferry details before leaving the mainland.
- Restaurant closing days and last orders vary. Eat earlier than in central Seoul and keep a simple backup snack.
- Separate Dokdo plans from the core itinerary: landings and sailings depend heavily on sea conditions.
