Yeosu combines a working harbor, Expo-era waterfront, island views, and one of Korea’s best-known nightscapes. It is easy to arrive by KTX, yet attractions are spread across the coast and Dolsan, so a successful visit groups places by area. Use daylight for Odongdo and waterfront walks, then cross toward Dolsan only once for the evening view.
Arriving and choosing where to stay
KTX-Eum and KTX services make Yeosu Expo Station the most convenient gateway for many travelers from Seoul and central Korea. Accommodation near the station and Expo waterfront suits car-free visitors; Yi Sun-sin Square is better for market food and the old center; Dolsan favors resorts and views but often requires more taxi travel. On busy weekends, book return trains and waterfront rooms in advance.
A balanced two-day route
- Day 1 morning: walk from the Expo area toward Odongdo. Check trail conditions and allow more time than the map suggests for coastal viewpoints.
- Day 1 afternoon: continue through the old waterfront toward Yi Sun-sin Square and the market streets, stopping before the evening rush.
- Day 1 evening: ride the maritime cable car or visit a Dolsan viewpoint. Choose one sunset location; crossing the bridge repeatedly wastes time in traffic.
- Day 2: select either Hyangiram for a steep temple-and-sea outing, an island excursion with confirmed sailings, or a relaxed museum and café day in town.
Getting around without a car
City buses reach the main districts but coastal geography makes journeys indirect. Use live Korean map data, save destinations in Hangul, and check the final bus before an evening stop. Taxis are practical between the old center, cable-car stations, and Dolsan; weekend bridge traffic can raise both travel time and fare. The cable car is transportation only between its two stations, not a substitute for the wider bus network.
Nightlife, food, and common mistakes
- At the romantic-pocha waterfront area, check posted prices and order quantities before sitting down; the atmosphere may matter more than value.
- Gejang set meals, eel dishes, and seafood portions differ widely. Ask whether a minimum order applies and disclose allergies clearly.
- Odongdo, Hyangiram, and ferry islands are separate outings. Trying all three in one day produces long transfers and little time at each place.
- Strong wind can suspend the cable car or boats even on a bright day. Keep an old-town food route as a backup.
- Respect residents around late-night areas and use designated bins; the waterfront is not an open-air party zone.
